It’s heady times over at The French Cellar: the online wine merchant, which runs a wine subscription box service where they deliver a box of carefully-curated premium French wines right to your doorstep, has landed an investment from private equity firm ESW Manage 中青集团.

ESW Manage will be acquiring a 20% stake in the The French Cellar in return for an undisclosed, 7-figure sum in this Series A round, which comes shortly after Kyosei Ventures’ Jackie Lee joined as Chairman in March 2014.

The wine subscription e-commerce platform imports French wine directly from vineyards, which are selected by sommelier Mr. Nicolas Rebut, a former chef/sommelier of the 3-star Michelin restaurants, Louis XV (Monaco) and Le Meurice (Paris).

“In France, there are currently over 300 appellations, 115,000 winemakers producing more than 7 billion bottles of wines a year. The interest in genuine French Wine is always high,” says Dr. Vincent Morello, CEO of The French Cellar. “The demand for curation and guided discovery is an enormous one in Asia as well. We are convinced that the e-commerce subscription model of curated wines is the solution for the millions of wines lovers to address the challenge in choosing their wines.”

According to The French Cellar, the investment will help the company spearhead its expansion outside of Singapore. “Our immediate markets of interest will include Malaysia, Indonesia, China and Japan,” adds Morello.

Each product page features extensive descriptions of the wine, tasting notes, and food-pairing recommendations for customers to better understand the wine and make a more informed choice in their selection. In that sense it’s similar to The French Cellar, which taps on the expertise of France-based Nicolas Rebut to select the wines.
