Singapore bars made an impressive showing at the recently concluded Asia’s 50 Best Bars 2016 awards, with a total of nine bars featuring in the list and speakeasy 28 Hong Kong Street landing top honours at the number one spot.

Asia’s 50 Best Bars, the Asian edition of World’s 50 Best Bars, last week announced its latest list of the top bars in the region. Singapore’s nightlife scene got a huge boost when nine of its bars placed in the top 50 lineup; indeed four of those nine Singapore bars mentioned even placed amongst the top 10, with local speakeasy 28 Hong Kong Street – which just some weeks back picked up the “The Stolichnaya Best Cocktail Bar” award at The Bar Awards 2016 (pictured) – taking the top spot.

“We weren’t quite expecting to see three of our bars getting into the list so we’re exceedingly happy with the results,” admitted Indra Kantono, co-founder of the Jigger & Pony Group, whose bars Jigger & Pony, Sugarhall and the recently opened Gibson scored the No.8, No.43 and No.22 spots respectively. “Huge credit to the team – their hard work has paid off.”

The nine Singapore bars that got into Asia’s 50 Best Bars list are:

  • 28 Hong Kong Street (No.1)
  • Manhattan Bar (No.5)
  • Operation Dagger (No.7)
  • Jigger & Pony (No.8)
  • Tippling Club (No.12)
  • D.Bespoke (No.13)
  • Gibson (No.22)
  • Anti:Dote (No.43)
  • Sugarhall (No. 48)

Singapore’s bar scene even beat out Tokyo’s highly lauded bar culture; although a total of eight Tokyo bars listed in the top 50, just one – veteran Hidetsugu Ueno’s Ginza joint Bar High Five – scraped into the top 10. This result is all the more impressive as it comes at a time when the Singapore F&B industry is facing some of its toughest challenges yet, with high taxes on alcohol, staffing challenges, astronomical rent increases and an impending global economic slowdown.
