Even if you dropped by Beerfest Asia over the past weekend you may not have realized – among the avalanche of new beers being introduced for the first time in Singapore, such as the Magic Hat Dream Machine, and a range from Beavertown, among others – that Italian beer brand Baladin also made its Singapore debut at the beer festival.
Brought in by Dre@mfields – the official distributor for brands such as Weihenstephan, Schneider Weisse, Moritz and Nøgne Ø – Baladin hails from the tiny Italian municipality of Piozzo in the west of the country (its population stands at less than 1,000 people!), and makes its beer with malt obtained from barley grown locally.
Baladin originally started in 1985 as a pub carrying a range of imported beers, but in 1996 became a brewpub that sold the beers it made. By 2002 demand outstripped supply and the brewpub had to expand its facilities by converting its nearby hen coop, and started to export its products in 2003.
Interestingly, Baladin specializes in spiced beers, and its portfolio includes the Isaac (brewed from raw wheat and flavored with coriander and orange zest) and the Saison-inspired Wayan (made with five different cereals and spiced with nine spices).
Dre@mfields will be bringing in a whopping ten beer variants from Baladin, although it’s a shame we won’t – at least for now – be seeing the Nora, an Egyptian-inspired beer concocted with organic khorasan KAMUT® wheat and sees the curious addition of myrrh and ginger into the brew, or the Leon, a dark ale which features chocolate notes mixed with the aromas
of dried fruit, licorice and toffee.
